The NFL preseason is here. Young players and veterans are fighting for roster spots, in some cases trying to stay in the league and avoid either retirement or a trip to Canada. Amon-Ra St. Brown is one former Trojan who had a quality debut with the Detroit Lions.

However, there was one very familiar name in the Tennessee Titans game against the Atlanta Falcons on Friday night. Believe it or not, it’s Trojans legend Matt Barkley, who landed a spot on the Titans’ roster and is battling it out for the backup job.

On Friday, Barkley played pretty well. He finished the game with a 5-8 mark and threw for 54 yards and a touchdown as the Titans cruised to a 23-3 win over the Falcons.

Here’s Barkley’s touchdown pass, and what a beauty it was.

What a throw from Barkley. If he keeps making plays like this, it will be hard for the Titans to cut him.

Barkley spent the previous three seasons with the Buffalo Bills as the backup to Josh Allen, who just inked a massive extension. However, the Bills brought in Mitchell Trubisky in the offseason, paving the way for Barkley’s departure.

Ryan Tannehill is entrenched as the Titans’ starter, and Barkley’s pursuit of a starting job in the NFL is not realistic at the moment. Nonetheless, it is refreshing to see him have some success, even if it is just in the preseason, and the hope is that he ends up with a roster spot for a talented team in the AFC.

There are worse jobs to have than NFL backup quarterback, that’s for sure.
